Internal filters must be completely submerged in the water to work correctly. For most, the airline must be connected to the inlet of the filter. The air is driven by a pump that is situated outside of the aquarium. Air is pumped into the filter and moves through it. Then it is dispersed on the water surface. The air bubbles create much-needed movement in the water that allows it to filter the liquid throughout the entire tank.
Disinfecting the Internal Water Filter with Rapicide
Answer: Internal filters can cope with the water volumes held in smaller aquariums. When the water volumes get above a certain level you will need to invest in an external filter. All filter suppliers will provide a table stating which model of filter is best for which water volume.

compatible models for eff-6002a internal water filter - Farnell
The filter is made from durable plastic approximately 10 inches in length and 1 inch in diameter. The internal components include membranes, iodized crystals and active carbon, which removes the iodine taste and medium-sized bacteria and is effective against waterborne bacteria and viruses, such as typhoid, cholera, E. coli, dysentery and diarrhea. The two-stage filtration system reduces harmful particles, from 125 micron down to a minimal 15 micron. The filters are the first step in providing communities with a sustainable clean water source. The filters are for intervening and providing emergency filtration. Once the straws are distributed, a team will evaluate additional pure water source options and, within a year, develop a sustainable, integrated sanitation plan that includes hygiene education to not only save lives but to transform communities. The filter can clean more than 800 liters of water total, or 2-3 liters of water per day. As a comparison, the average child in Africa receives 8 ounces of water per day. The filter on average will last one year and will clog internally when it is no longer effective. The most common household water filters use what are known as (sometimes called active carbon or AC) based oncharcoal(a very porous form of carbon, made by burning something like ina reduced supply of oxygen). Charcoal is like a cross between the graphite"lead" in a pencil and a sponge. It has a huge internal surface area, packed withnooks and crannies, that attract and trap chemical impurities througha process called (where liquidsor gases become trapped by solids or liquids). But while charcoal is great forremoving many common impurities (including chlorine-basedchemicals introduced during waste-water purification, some pesticides, and industrial solvents), it can't cope with "hardness"(limescale), heavy (unless a special type of activated carbonfilter is used), sodium, nitrates, fluorine, or microbes. The maindisadvantage of activated carbon is that the filters eventually clogup with impurities and have to be replaced. That means there's anongoing (and sometimes considerable) cost.
