I have my pom on frontline, but she had 2 ticks on her last nite

Frontline DOES kill ticks, but they have to bite the dog to be killed and it takes a few hours for them to die. A good shampoo will kill them if they haven't attached yet... leave the suds in contact with the skin for a few minutes before rinsing. It works the same as killing fleas... the protective coating on the tick is dissolved and the tick drowns.
Unfortunately, the collar works the same way, the tick must contact the poison in the collar before it will work. I would bathe the dog and stay away from that trail!!!! Also, make sure your Frontline is up to date... if she gets new in 2 weeks or less, I would go ahead and apply it now.
