I think I'm gonna splurge and buy a battery operated gravel vac.

Quickly cleanse a fish tank of waste without the hassle of a siphon, hoses or lugging full buckets of water with the EHEIM Quick Vac Pro Automatic Gravel Cleaner and Sludge Extractor. This battery operated device can run for up to 4 hours on fully charged batteries, and can safely be completely submerged in up to 3 feet of water. Routinely cleaning a tank alleviates the pressure on the filter, helps to clean a tank of debris for a clean fish-friendly environment, and extends the time necessary between changing the water. The powered design allows for quick spot cleaning without all of the setup necessary when using a siphon system.

Battery operated Gravel Vac for fish tank

I came across the Eheim Quick Vac Pro Battery Operated Gravel Vacuum at the store I have never used a battery operated gravel vac, but I think that you may have been swindled a little bit because there is a much cheaper alternative to them. What I use is a python gravel vac which I hook directly to my sink. When I turn on the faucet in my sink, the water movement gets the siphon started for you...hence, no more sucking on disgusting hoses and more importantly, no more fish water getting into your mouth. To add to that, the sink also keeps the siphon action going strong and in fact, I often take my vac out of the water, which breaks the siphon, but am still able to put it nback under water and the sink starts the siphon again with no effort on my part. I feel that this is not only the most economical option, but the most effective option for its price range.

Battery-powered cleaning convenience for freshwater aquariums

The Eheim Aquarium Vacuum is also sold as the Eheim Quick Vac Pro. It is a battery operated submersible vacuum that can be used to clean the substrate (sand, gravel, bare bottom) in your aquarium. At least, that's what the manufacturer (Eheim) claims. The price for this aquarium vacuum is around $50 US dollars and I have seen it in the local stores (petsmart and petco) and you can definitely pick one up online for a few dollars less than retail. In looking at reviews on aquarium forums, on online shops and at Amazon it was especially interesting to see the disparity in the reviews. One person would claim that it's the best piece of equipment that they have ever used on their aquarium and the next person would say that it was a complete waste of money. What was the truth? I had to pick one up to find out.One thing that sets this electric suction pump apart from siphon cleaners is that there are no buckets or hoses required for the operation. You simply just insert the suction end of the tool into the gravel and push a button located at the top of the handle. The waste will be removed and deposited into the super-fine mesh cartridge. The EHEIM quick vac is also battery operated, so you will not have to worry about trying to find an empty electrical plug and running an electrical cable. It is designed to do all of the work for you, so you can rest assured that your tank will be clean and free of toxins.
